LEMBA: The Africana Authors Space - Boitumelo Motsoeneng
Monday Dec 25, 2023
Monday Dec 25, 2023
Introducing Boitumelo Motsoeneng, a writer, a child of God, and storyteller, she believes in the transformative power of art and the enduring strength of integrity, service, and competence. Boitumelo strives to create stories that touch hearts inspire creativity and make a difference in the world.
This is a story of tragedy and catastrophe. Rape, betrayal, homelessness, identity crisis, and fear. With each page, things seem to get worse and the glow of hope fades, but in the end, it all makes sense. The beauty of going through it all with God is that none of it is wasted, every ounce of it gives glory to God and shapes you to be like Christ. And that's what you will get to appreciate, the perfection of God when He works things out for good.
This is not to say that one heals completely from things that God uses to mature and transform us. The physical trauma after rape, the psychological consequences, the difficulties in building and maintaining relationships, and the negative relationship with one's body remain part of the struggle for the longest time. Some things heal with time, but some stay for God knows how long. The ones that don't heal become a thorn in your flesh that God uses to keep you low and human, even as He makes your life better. And in this book, the author lays out where she used to be, how much she has healed, and what she still struggles with.

EDUCATED AFRICANA: EP.12 - Government’s Role in Education
Wednesday Dec 20, 2023
Wednesday Dec 20, 2023
Can we talk about the elephant in the room and the whole array of other animals with it? African governments are struggling in the area of Education. Whether there is even a will to provide quality is debatable. 60 years down the line most countries are till grappling with education models they inherited with barely any improvement, reformation or complete overhaul towards creating a relevance and representation.
Mwansa Mukalula-Kalumbi and Faith Abiodun discuss the role government plays in Education granted it is the main education provider for the majority of the population. What more can be done by government?
Let's talk about it.

The world has advanced so quickly. However, education in Africa is not keeping up at the same pace. Be it the curriculum content, teaching methods or stakeholders commitment, there is an urgency to adapt to the times. Furthermore, conversations around Education have only focused on the traditional models. Until now.
The Educated Africana, hosted by Tebogo Kangote III brings together diverse voices to have in depth discussions about Education in Africa.

EDUCATED AFRICANA: Ep.11 - Inclusive Education
Sunday Dec 17, 2023
Sunday Dec 17, 2023
What does inclusive education really look like? Earlier in the season we learned that Free Education does not include children with special needs, and yet they need it the most. We have learned that girls skip school because of their periods, and yet condoms are given out for free whilst sanitary towels have a price tag. Every child has the right to education, and yet many are left behind.
Andrea Mwalula talks at length with Tebogo on the possibilities of an inclusive education system on the African continent.
Let's talk about it.

EDUCATED AFRICANA: Ep.10 - Study Abroad, Yay or Nay
Wednesday Dec 13, 2023
Wednesday Dec 13, 2023
People choose to study in international schools for varying reasons. Whilst travel and discovering global cultures is beneficial, there is also a dark side. From racism, depression, susceptibility to addictions, brain drain, lifelong debt are real problems we face as Africans.
Petra Chinyere, Mo! Sibyl and Helen Leale-Green talk about this quagmire. So many of us covet this for our children, therefore, what we really should be doing is figuring out how to make this a profitable return on investment.
Let's talk about it.

EDUCATED AFRICANA: EP.9 Trades vs. Corporate
Wednesday Dec 06, 2023
Wednesday Dec 06, 2023
How do you define success? What do you want for your children? Do you believe that there is a strict hierarchy of trades and corporate jobs? We here this over and over again of how back in the day our parents wanted us to have the top three jobs; lawyer, doctor, or engineer. But we all soon learned not everyone can be in those professions. We need people across the board. So why is there such a stigma against blue collar jobs?
Zenith Malawo and Gift Mbewe have an exciting discussion about the pros and cons of both trades vs. corporate career paths. They also discuss the prevailing perceptions.
Let's talk about it.

EDUCATED AFRICANA: EP.8 - Teacher Burnout
Sunday Dec 03, 2023
Sunday Dec 03, 2023
A lot of parents expect teachers to perform miracles with their child. To a large extent teachers do have a great impact in moulding young minds, but at what cost?
Sekai Chitaukire and Ancietos Mwansa talk about Teacher Burnout from the pressures of being a teacher, the response of administration and parents to their requests and self advocacy for better working conditions. Teachers are humans too.
Let's talk about it.

There are those amongst are who are exceptional. They process the world differently and do things according to their own rhythm. Elizabeth Mwansa, Florence Chawelwa and Emily Chinokoro take us into the world of these children, from their potential, to the struggles, to the experiences of their caregivers and parents.
In a world where free education is a basic right for every child, these exceptional children are often excluded.

THE EDUCATED AFRICANA: Ep.6 - Nutrition
Wednesday Oct 04, 2023
Wednesday Oct 04, 2023
Makheni Zonneveld and Tokozile N. Ngwenya are passionate about children's nutrition. Food affects the quality of one's day from your energy levels to your ability to concentrate, or get adequate rest. We have to question, is what we feed our children harming them or benefiting them.
We live in communities where fast food has been made a status symbol of success. Where stores sell us conveniently packaged foods for the busy parent. Where schools rarely offer guidance on what foods would be appropriate or nutritious. And more often than not as parents we are doing what we can with the knowledge that we have which may not be much. How can we do better?
Let's talk about it.

THE EDUCATED AFRICANA: Ep.5 - Period Poverty
Wednesday Sep 27, 2023
Wednesday Sep 27, 2023
Namutula Sindila, Wendy Musonda and Agness Tambulukani are formidable warriors in the fight against period poverty.
Period poverty is a lack of access to menstrual products, education, hygiene facilities, waste management, or a combination of these. It affects an estimated 500 million people worldwide and has a direct effect on how many women do not have access to education for an accumulative 3 months out of the year due to their period.
Think about it a girl misses 3 months of school every year and yet is expected to perform at the same level as a boy.
We have to talk about how to eradicate period poverty.

THE EDUCATED AFRICANA: Ep.4 - Representation Matters
Wednesday Sep 20, 2023
Wednesday Sep 20, 2023
Fiske Nyirongo and Kamapala Chukwuka began to create children's books with African characters and relatable story lines out of necessity.
Do you remember going to school and the first thing they told you was E for Eskimo, I for igloo, F for fox .... confused because you have never ever seen those things before.
Then the literature goes on to highlight caucasian children going to the beach and making sand castles .... can you blame a child for not being engaged or interested in school. It has nothing to do with them from day 1.
On the flip side most parents aspire to send our children to international schools and then those schools do not teach our children any indigenous knowledge or the very country we live in. So we have children who do not speak local languages and have no pride in their own heritage.
We need to talk about this. Representation Matters

THE EDUCATED AFRICANA: Ep.3 - Student Mental Health
Wednesday Sep 13, 2023
Wednesday Sep 13, 2023
Catherine Besa, Chisha Luembe and Sandra Lumamba discuss how student mental health is dealt with in different settings including in primary schools through to university. Deteriorating student mental health is not unique to Africa. It is a global crisis. Schools are scrambling to adapt and handle the growing mental health needs of their learners including dealing with suicide watch frequently.
However, It is common for the older generation to be dismissive by saying "In our times we were mentally stronger, but children of these days are weak."
Is this true? What has changed? What can be done?
